Cloth Diapers

Four babies later and the youngest in her teens, would I use cloth diapers if I had it all to do again?

Definitely!

You might be thinking, “Oh, she used cloth diapers because she mothered her children in a different time.”

Let me tell you that I was outnumbered even then.

It was very unusual to see another mother using cloth diapers. When I lived in Key West, there was a large alternative community there. I had strong support there. But when I went for a visit back home I was the only one using them. It really did not faze me because I couldn’t imagine using any thing else.

It was so easy using cloth diapers.

I loved the softness I was putting next to my child at every diaper change.

The hard plastic tape on plastic diapers (now I think some use the soft tape), would sometimes end up wiggling next to the babies hips and leave red marks.

The thought of me adding all that plastic to the landfill; I just couldn’t do it. It was a rare moment that my child had a plastic diaper on.

cloth diapers everywhere

Jeremy 1 week old; wrong way to put on a diaper

I remember the first diaper change. Bob changed all the diapers for the first two weeks. We hadn’t planned it that way and to this day I have no idea how it happened. He did the first change and I just said how well he did it and he kept doing it.

He didn’t do it the best way but it worked. I think the midwife showed him how to do it properly on the third day. The pictures are so cute.

The correct way to put on a cloth diaper

When our first was two months old we headed out of Key West for the long trip up North. This was a yearly pilgrimage as it was just too hot in the Keys in the summer.

Really, Really Free Market in Naples, Florida

Really Really Free Market in Naples, Florida

Free market poster

Went to the Really Really Free Market in Naples, Florida today.

The whole community is invited to come and share anything (within reason) for FREE.

Free, really?

Yes it really is all for FREE.

That’s why its called the Really Really Free Market.

The concept is simple. Recycle and share.

Recycle things that you have sitting in your space that you longer want or need. I’ll list a few things I have given away as examples: bread maker, pots and pans, clothing, beads, file cabinet, fossil purse. You get the idea.

The way it is considered recycled is because it is not ending up in the dump. It is being reused by someone else who is usually thrilled to receive it.

A few months ago I brought a bread maker that had been used a few times and was in perfect condition. Today when I went a women came up to me and said she was the one that I gave the bread maker to and it works great and she loves it. Today she got a bottle of laundry detergent (my new washer only uses front loader type) from me and was thrilled once again. The joy on seeing something that was annoying to me make someone else happy is well worth the trip into Naples.

As an added bonus, afterwards we go to eat at the health food restaurant right around the corner, Food and Thought. They have great food that is all organic. When were done eating we shop in their store which has reasonable prices for some of the best looking organic produce among many other healthy choices.

Free Pep Talk

Free Pep Talk

Here’s how the share part works. Need a pep talk. All you need to do is walk up to the lady with the huge sign that reads “Need a Pep Talk”. She’ll give you one for free. Want to teach a yoga class. Make a sign that reads “Free Yoga class”. Your sure to get some students pretty quick. I saw a women paint a piece of art in oils and give it away. Anything you can think of to share that creates happiness for others or yourself is great. There are no organizers. All they ask is you be respectful of others and leave no trace you were there behind when you leave.

To: Juma, Love Days

Juma,

When I ask you to pay attention to the route we were taking on our trip to the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando it was not simply to learn where we were going, it was more than that. It was to be awake to what is happening in your life when it is happening. Take advantage of the moments where life is teaching you a lesson.

Life doesn’t always have lessons for you. Some moments are truly there just for the moment. That moment my come with laughter, joy, pain, love, first love, old love. The list goes on.

Right now I am just talking about being in the moment where life is presenting you with an opportunity to move forward in love.

I am also talking about life presenting you with an easy lesson. Like for instance your mom learning an easy way to get somewhere near the college you are going to but if you don’t pay attention you might end up getting lost and having to find your own way.

All this while you are in the same car with her and she tries to explain to you what just happened but you say “Don’t try to tell me because I will not remember any of it.” and I say, “But if you would just try to listen, the next time you hear it, it will be that much easier to understand.”

This is the tug of war that goes on between most children and their parents.

When will children learn life could be easier if they would just pay attention and when will adults learn their kids need to learn it in their own time in their own way.

But for now we will go forward with the message of moving-forward-in-love thing.

Story number 1

Getting lost on my way to Orlando today, I went in the gas station to buy a new Florida map. Mine dated back in the 80’s. I knew I was also going to ask for directions from whomever was working.

Two women were working. On first appearance, life did not look like it had swung many dollars their way. They were southern women who had probably lived many a years working long hours and minimum wage. Exercise and diet were not a high priority nor was dental.

“Hi, My map is pretty old so I want to buy this map but could you also tell me how to get to I-4,” pointing on the new map I also ask, “Is this toll road around Orlando better than going thru the center?”

The woman behind the counter, looking befuddled, calls the other women over, “Sandy, you want to help her, your much better with directions.”

WOAO?-What’s Organic About Organics?

WOAO?-What's Organic About Organics?

Silk Brand Soy Milk not Organic

Dean food company switched there ‘Silk’ soy milk to non-organic soybeans and thought no one would notice. They changed the label recently and said same product, new label. I believed them.

But they lied. They changed the label to Natural from Organic because they had to. They no longer buy organic soy beans. They still charge the same as if it was organic. They didn’t even change the bar code so many grocery store owners still believed it to be organic.

Labeling deception

Dean Foods is one of the big food giants that serves processed, factory-made foods and beverages to the American people. It’s the parent company of Horizon Organic, the so-called “organic” milk maker that’s been caught up in a web of deception exposed by the Organic Consumers Association (http://www.naturalnews.com/021763_o…).

Health Freedom Alliance is my source for this article.

Do you try to buy organic?

If you don’t buy all organic are there a few products you try to make sure they are organic?

If so then which ones and why?

Pumpkin Blossom Sandwiches, YUM!!!

Fall has arrived, it’s time to make a pumpkin blossom sandwich.
The pumpkin blossoms can be picked early in the morning, before 9am.

Take out stamen, soak in Tupperware of water, just enough to cover.

When ready to fry them up just dip them in flour and fry in small amount of oil.

Once crisp, put on piece of soft bread (soft oatmeal by Pepperidge Farm is my favorite), add mustard and you have a delicious sandwich.

I grew up eating these and have passed it down to my kids, they also love them..

While looking for a blossom picture I found this fun blog, http://www.mybitofearth.net

She happens to also have an article about fried blossoms. I love it! We fry ours flat verses hers look like they were picked closed. They also look yummy.

Cafe Mom, 10 Worst Foods for Kids

While searching at Café Mom, a sort-of-blogging-super-advertised site for moms, I read a post by Misssy2000. She referenced family4life web page that listed the ‘10 Worst Foods for Kids’ (previously in Parents Magazine-May 2001).

I was nonplussed to see all the comments that basically said, “Of course I feed these foods to my kids and so what.”

What is going on here in America-Land of the Free? Yeah, free to clog your kids arteries and set them on their way to early diabetes before he reaches 10.

Here is the list and below are a few comments I highlighted with my response.

1 Chicken Nuggets Any fast food that’s breaded and fried is bursting with fat.  Nuggets and their dipping sauces also have a lot of sodium, which can contribute to high blood pressure in adults.  Don’t let your child’s taste buds get used to salty foods. for children 3 and under.  Serve only occasionally, look for lower-fat brands (try turkey dogs), and cut into very small pieces for young children.

2 Chips Giving your child a handful of chips with lunch on occasion is fine, but keep in mind that potato chips, corn chips, and cheese puffs are mostly fat, sodium, and empty calories.

3 Doughnuts Most are packed with artery-clogging saturated fat and trans-fatty acids.  An average doughnut also has 200 to 300 calories and few other nutrients.

4 French Fries It’s unfortunate that fries are the most popular vegetable dish in the U.S.  Kids love them, but they’re extremely high in fat and have few vitamins.  If your children clamor for them at the drive-through, at least stick with a small portion.

5 Fruit Leather Most rolled-up dried fruit has a dab of fruit, a teeny bit of fiber, few vitamins except those that have been added, and lots of sugar.  Serve fresh fruit instead.

6 Hot Dogs Regular dogs are high in fat (13 or more grams per serving), have lots of sodium along with nitrates, and don’t provide much protein for the calories.  They’re also a choking hazard.

7 Juice-flavored Drinks Most are no more than 10 percent juice; the rest is water and sweeteners.

8 Prepackaged Lunches Sure, they’re convenient, but they also tend to be high in saturated fat and sodium (more than 1,200 milligrams in some, about half the recommended daily max) and packed with sugary treats.  Most also are nutritionally unbalanced, because they contain no fruits or vegetables.

9 Soda American children drink more soft drinks today than ever.  The average 12-ounce can of soda supplies almost ten teaspoons of sugar, which can contribute to obesity and tooth decay.  Kids who drink soda instead of milk/soy milk are also shortchanging their bones of calcium and other nutrients.

10 Toaster Pastries These contain lots of fat and not much fruit.  Instead, make a piece of raisin toast for your child, and serve it with jam.

This woman gets the award for most sane.

My children don’t eat that stuff in my house as part of their daily diet but I do let them eat that stuff at birthday parties, back yard bbqs and the like. The only thing they do eat on a daily basis from that list is fruit leathers, but I but the Fruitabu (sp?) ones. They are are full serving of 100% organic fruit. My theory is you have to let them eat that junk every now and again as a treat and not make it totally off limits, kinda like me and my monthly pint of Ben and Jerry’s.”

I found these to be the most ridiculous!!

A few mothers that say they don’t fry there chicken nuggets and fries. One mother says she only buys Tyson.

FYI: They come out of the package already fried!

“She will ONLY eat chicken if it’s a nugget. I buy the Tyson 100% white meat ones and stick them in the oven or microwave I don’t fry them. She only has them fried if we eat out….”

Than this mother is just … well you decide.

“Quoting FaerieMommie23:

Yes I give my kids all that crap and I dont care what anybody thinks about it. I’m not going to tell them they cant have certain stuff when other kids can, its not fair to them”

Then there is the older mother who says:

”I’m just an older mother who remembers being crazy like this neurotic shit. Time waster. My daughter has a body that rivels Giselle Bunchden off of this diet! hahahahhaa!”

Seems her life is a time waster. She gave up and wants us all to join her. Being skinny is not a sign of health.

This next mother thinks her daughter is fine because her doctors said so. Did he exam her intestines and colon, could he see the stress on organs that can hold up for years then tire out completely. He checked the cholesterol on a 5 year old, really!

“so have mine and the Doctor at their last visit said they are very healthy 5 and 7 yr olds.. My 5 yr old has even had his cholesterol checked and its perfect…”

You can survive off this diet but are you being given the best start in life.

Health does not just come from what you eat; your health is also affected by your mind and environment. Obsession of any kind is a disease (dis-ease). Moderation is a good thing but what is your definition of moderation. Once a day, once a week? It is different for everyone.

Misssy2000 gave a good post. Something to think about. Nowhere did she say ‘never eat these’. She was suggesting you avoid them when there are so many other alternatives.

“right now chicken nuggets is the only thing I can get my son to eat. I can’t wait till he tires of them”

I do not understand when a parent says “that is all my child will eat”. Your child will not starve to death if you no longer have any of these unhealthy foods in your house. He may not eat today but he will eat tomorrow or the next day.

·        “Yup!  My boys have had all of those.  Having junk in moderation and combined with a healthy diet and outside exercise isn’t that bad. ”

“Isn’t that bad” Is that what we are willing to settle for? Is this why we became parents?

Which is more filling, a banana or a few cookies? The banana will sustain the body longer and better.

What do you think, is eating ‘ok sometimes’ enough?

recycle styrofoam

I am looking for a way to recycle Styrofoam. I purchased two desks recently; they came with large sheets of Styrofoam. I know what to do with peanut Styrofoam. The peanuts I get in most packaging I carry to my closest UPS store. They are happy to get them. But what to do with the large odd shaped stuff? The easy way out is to just throw them in the trash. Most people can do this, why can’t I. They just drag it out on trash day and boom; it’s gone the next morning.
recycle styro

SORRY, Lee County doesn't recycle styrofoam!

Is that a real panther enjoying the styrofoam?
